Almost everyone buys one ankle brace. Then, about three weeks in, they want a second — for the other side, or simply because the first one is hanging over the radiator. This is two. Two knit sleeves and two adjustable straps, so there is always a dry ankle brace in the drawer.

Each sleeve is a single piece of copper-infused nylon knit with ten per cent spandex, shaped on a 3D knitting machine rather than cut and sewn flat. That shows up at the heel. The ankle brace pulls on like a sock, the heel comes out through a round opening at the back, the toes stay free at the front, and there is no seam ridge running under the sole for you to notice at mile two.

The knit changes density as it goes. Ribbed panels sit over the arch and around the ankle bone, lighter open mesh across the front where the foot has to hinge. So the ankle brace holds firmly in the two places you want held, and stays out of the way everywhere else — which is really the only reason a knit ankle brace gets worn on a Tuesday rather than left in a drawer.

Then there is the strap, which is the part that makes it adjustable. It is separate: a flat non-stretch band with hook-and-loop at one end. You lay it over the top of the foot, take it under the arch, bring it back around the ankle in a figure-8 and press it down. Wrap it firmly for a long day on your feet, wrap it lightly for a short one, or leave it off entirely and wear the sleeve on its own. One ankle brace, two levels of hold, and you decide each morning.

Being straight about it: a knit ankle brace is not a lace-up. There is no rigid panel in here and it will not lock anything down. What this ankle brace does is fit under a sock and inside a normal shoe without you thinking about it, which is exactly why it gets used on the days a stiffer brace stays in the cupboard.

Sizes run S to 2XL from your own heel-and-ankle measurement, taken off this brace’s own published chart rather than a generic one. Knit stretches, so the size you choose is also the compression you get: a size down holds firmer, a size up is easier to live in all day. Wider or thicker feet should take the larger one.

Measure around the heel and the ankle together with a soft tape. S covers 7" to 9", M covers 9" to 12", L covers 12" to 14", XL covers 14" to 16.5" and 2XL covers 16.5" to 19.5". Because it is a knit, the size also sets the compression: take the smaller size for a firmer hold, the larger for something you can wear all day without noticing.

No, and plenty of people do not. The sleeve works on its own for everyday wear; the strap is there for the days you want the ankle brace to hold more firmly. Attach the hook-and-loop end onto the strap itself rather than onto the knit, which keeps the knit from pilling.

Yes. It is a thin knit with a smooth underside, so it goes under a sock and into a trainer or a work shoe without much argument. Add the strap and it gets a little bulkier across the top of the foot — enough that a tight dress shoe may object.

The nylon yarn is copper-infused, which is what gives the knit its tan patterning. It is a fibre treatment used for odour control in the fabric. We are not going to claim anything beyond that.

Close the hook-and-loop on the strap first so it does not grab the knit, then hand wash both in cool water with a mild detergent and dry them flat. Keep them off the radiator — heat is what kills the elastic. With two in the pack you can wash one and wear the other.
