The first thing anyone does with a floating moon lamp is put a hand under it. There is nothing there: an inch or two of open air between the sphere and the oval wooden base it hangs over, no rod, no stem, no clear plastic post quietly doing the work. Magnets in the base hold a 5.9-inch printed moon up, and push its power across the gap at the same time, which is why no cable ever runs into the moon itself.

Then the floating moon lamp starts turning. You do not have to nudge this one — once it is up it rotates slowly on its own, the way a planet does, and the printed craters come round again a minute later. The base does something of its own too: a light strip runs round its rim and cycles through colours, so there is a coloured ring of light on the table underneath a plain white moon.

Because the moon is plain. This is the honest limit and it is worth knowing before you order: the sphere has three modes, dimmable, running from a cool white through warm white to a deep yellow. Everything is one button on top of the base. No remote to lose and nothing to pair, which also means there is no way to change anything from across the room.
