This is a single piece of American hickory, hand-sanded and finished in matte black lacquer. Hickory is one of the densest hardwoods on the continent — 1820 on the Janka scale, around 41% harder than red oak — which is why a wooden cane made from it doesn't flex underhand the way a hollow shaft does.

The handle is the classic crook: it sits in a closed hand, and the long inside curve gives you a second place to hold further down when you're negotiating a narrow doorway or getting out of a chair. It also hooks over a chair back or a table edge, which is more useful than it sounds.

There is no telescoping section, so nothing rattles and nothing slips. It is cut to length instead — 32 to 38 inches depending on your height — and the base carries a reinforced rubber tip for hardwood, tile and pavement.
