Hands full, room dark, and the switch is on the far side of the table. That is the small recurring annoyance this jellyfish lamp is built around: say something in its direction and it comes on. The voice switch is the whole reason to pick this version over the otherwise identical lamp that ships with a remote instead.

Nothing about this jellyfish lamp holds water. There is no tank and no glass — the jellyfish IS the lamp. A soft translucent silicone dome glows from inside, nine silicone tentacles hang underneath it, and a quiet motor turns the whole skirt around the stem so the jellyfish lamp drifts instead of sitting still. There is nothing to fill, nothing to spill and nothing to empty out six months later.

Twelve LED bulbs sit in the dome of the jellyfish lamp and give 17 colours on a slow gradient, or a plain warm white when you want a lamp rather than a colour. The silicone diffuses it, so it is an even glow rather than a bright point, and the tentacles pick up the colour along their edges.

The rest of the jellyfish lamp controls live on the underside of the base: a slide switch, a manual button and the Type-C charging port, all out of sight. There is also a touch control on the lamp itself. What there is not is a remote — this is the voice version, and if you want a handset the sister lamp is the one to buy.

A 1000mAh battery charges over Type-C in about an hour and a half and runs for up to about three hours. Short, deliberately: it is a jellyfish lamp you carry to a bedside, a balcony or a shelf with no socket behind it. There is a moulded hole in the base as well, so a jellyfish lamp this light can simply hang from a hook.

The jellyfish lamp stands 8.85 inches tall on a 3.34 inch base — small, light, and mostly air.

THE SWITCH

Say Something And It Comes On

A voice-activated switch turns it on without touching it, which is the point when your hands are full or the lamp is across the table. There is a touch control on the lamp as well.

THE LIGHT

Seventeen Colours, Or Plain Warm White

Twelve LED bulbs sit inside the silicone dome and fade through seventeen colours on their own. There is a separate warm white if you would rather it just read as a lamp.

Frequently asked
questions.

The questions people actually ask before buying one.

No. There is no tank and no water in it at all. The lamp itself is the jellyfish: a silicone dome that glows, with nine tentacles hanging underneath. Nothing to fill and nothing to spill.

Speak or clap near it and it comes on. It is a sound-triggered switch rather than a smart assistant, so there is nothing to pair, no app and no account.

No. This is the voice-switch version, and everything else happens on the touch control or on the slide switch and button under the base. If you want a handset, the near-identical sister lamp ships with an infrared remote instead.

Yes. A quiet motor turns all nine of them around the stem and they swing outward slightly as they go — a slow sweep rather than a spin.

Up to about three hours from a 1000mAh battery, with about an hour and a half to recharge over Type-C. It is a lamp for an evening rather than one to leave on all night.

Yes. There is a moulded hole in the base for a hook or a cord, and the lamp is light enough that hanging it is straightforward.

22.5 cm tall — about 8.85 inches — on a base 8.5 cm, about 3.34 inches, across.
