Curved tanks bend what is inside them. Look at a cylindrical jellyfish lamp from an angle and the jellyfish stretch sideways, the tentacles smear, and the whole thing reads as a lens with something in it. This one is a square tower: four flat parallel walls, crisp corners, and shapes that stay the shape they are from wherever you are sitting.

Inside this jellyfish lamp there are four things moving, not one. Two jellyfish with long tentacles ride the current up the column, and two small fish hang lower down and turn in it. Because the walls are flat you can actually watch them pass each other rather than watching a distorted smear go up and down.

The jellyfish lamp arrives dry and you fill it. Tap water to the line under the lid, the two jellyfish and the two fish, close it, switch it on. A stirring rod comes in the box for the one job everybody hits on day one: a new jellyfish traps air under its bell and floats at the top instead of circulating, and a poke with the rod frees it.

The controls are two buttons on the base. ON/OFF does what it says, and LIGHT stops the colour cycle on whichever colour is showing, so the jellyfish lamp can rotate slowly through the set or sit on one flat colour all evening. There is no remote — which is also why there is nothing to lose down the side of the sofa. A 4-hour timer shuts it down on its own.

Power is the flexible part of this jellyfish lamp. A UL-listed mains adapter is in the box, so it plugs in and runs indefinitely. It also takes batteries, which are not included, and that is the setting that lets a jellyfish lamp stand on a mantelpiece or a bookshelf with no socket near it and no cable down the wall.

The jellyfish lamp stands 12.2 inches tall on a footprint of roughly 5 by 4.5 inches, so it wants a shelf with height above it rather than a crowded desk. The motor is a water pump rather than a fan: at arm's length it is a soft moving-water sound, and from across the room there is effectively nothing to hear.

IT IS A REAL TANK

You Fill It With Water

The tower ships empty and takes about a minute at the sink. Fill it to the line under the lid, add the two jellyfish and the two fish, close it, and the pump does the rest.

IN THE BOX

What Comes In The Box

Two jellyfish, two small fish, the mains adapter, the cable and a long stirring rod. The rod is for freeing trapped air from under a new jellyfish so it circulates instead of floating.

Mains Adapter, Or Batteries

The UL-listed adapter is included, so it plugs in and stays on. Batteries are the other option and are not included — that is what puts it somewhere with no socket nearby.

THE SHAPE

A Tall Square Tower

12.2 inches tall on a footprint of about 5 by 4.5 inches. The four walls are flat and parallel, so the jellyfish keep their shape from any angle instead of stretching the way they do in a cylinder.

Two jellyfish, two fish. And a socket you do not need.

Frequently asked
questions.

The questions people actually ask before buying one.

No. It ships dry. You fill the tower with ordinary tap water up to the line under the lid, drop in the two jellyfish and the two small fish, and close it. Nothing moves until you do.

Freeing trapped air. A new jellyfish often holds a bubble under its bell and sits at the top instead of circulating; a poke with the rod releases it and it starts to drift.

No. Two buttons on the front of the base do everything — on and off, and holding the colour cycle on whichever colour is showing. Nothing to misplace, but nothing to change from the sofa.

Two ways. A UL-listed mains adapter is in the box. It also runs on batteries, which are not included, and that is the option that lets you stand it away from a socket.

Yes, after four hours. If you leave it running when you go to bed it will have shut down by itself rather than run all night.

It is a water pump, not a fan, so there is no whirring note. Up close it is a soft moving-water sound; from across the room there is effectively nothing to hear.

12.2 inches tall, with a base footprint of roughly 5 by 4.5 inches. It is a tall narrow object, so it wants headroom on the shelf more than it wants width.
