The silicone gel pad here is a ring. It sits around the kneecap and leaves the middle of it clear, so the pressure goes into the softer tissue circling the bone and the cap is cradled from all sides instead of pressed from above. While you are moving, that ring is also what keeps the sleeve tracking with the knee rather than sliding across it.

Down each side there is a flexible spring stay. They bend forward and back with you, but they push back against the sideways wobble a knit alone can do nothing about — real structure, without the straps and hinges of a rigid brace.

The body is cushioned neoprene, contoured so it holds close at every angle instead of gaping in the crook when you sit.
