The bedside lamp problem is always the same one. Bright enough to read by means far too bright at two in the morning, and a lamp soft enough to leave on all night is useless for a book. This moon lamp does both ends because the light has two dials rather than one.

The first is colour temperature: five whites, from a deep 2700K amber that reads as candlelight to a 6500K daylight white that is genuinely crisp. The second is brightness, in six steps, and the bottom step is one percent — a glow you can sleep through and still find the door by. The shape of the moon lamp is a 4.72-inch globe printed with a moon surface, sitting on a slim black rod above a flat black disc, about nine inches tall in total. It is a table lamp, not an ornament that happens to glow: the globe is a shade, and the light coming through the printed craters is what makes the moon lamp look like anything at all.

Two honest limits. It is corded — there is no battery, so the moon lamp lives wherever a cable reaches and does not come to the sofa with you.
