There is a version of this that costs four times as much and does exactly the same thing. This is the plain one. A six-inch printed moon lamp, a wooden base, a remote in the box, and no feature you will never use.

The part that earns it is the ring on the base. Touch it and the colour steps on — seven of them, in a loop, no handset required. That is the control you actually use at eleven at night, and it means the moon lamp still works when the remote has gone under the bed. The remote opens up the full sixteen colours along with flash, fade and strobe.

It runs off a 500 mAh battery and charges over USB, and in its default state that is more than nine hours of light. So the moon lamp comes off the shelf and goes wherever you are — a windowsill, a tent, the floor of a bedroom fort — with nothing trailing behind it.

Two things to be straight about. The touch ring gives you seven colours, not sixteen, so if you want the other nine you need the handset. And the auto-off timer — fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes — is a remote-only setting too. Neither changes what the moon lamp does; both are worth knowing before it arrives.

The moon lamp’s surface is 3D printed rather than painted, so the craters have real depth and the light breaks across them instead of coming out flat. Three finishes to pick from at the top of the page. Beyond that there is nothing to decide, which is rather the point of this moon lamp.

One size, three finishes. Nothing to measure — what matters is where it goes and how you keep it charged.

  • Size – 6 inches across, on a round wooden base with two angled dowels
  • Finish – Yellow, Purple or White; choose at the top of the page
  • Power – 500 mAh rechargeable battery, charged over USB, 9+ hours in the default state
  • Control – touch ring on the base for 7 colours; remote for 16, plus flash, fade, strobe, brightness and the timer

Give it a flat, steady surface. Wipe the sphere and the wooden base with a dry, soft cloth — the wood is untreated, so keep it away from water.

TOUCH CONTROL

Touch The Base, Or Reach For The Remote

A metal touch ring on the wooden base steps through seven colours, one tap at a time, with no handset involved. The remote adds the other nine plus flash, fade and strobe — but the lamp still does its job if the remote is lost, which is not true of every moon lamp.

NINE HOURS

Nine Hours Off One Charge

A 500 mAh battery, charged over USB, running more than nine hours in its default state. Once it is topped up there is no cable at all, so the lamp goes on a shelf with no socket near it and comes back down again whenever you want it somewhere else.

SIXTEEN COLOURS

Sixteen Colours On The Remote

Cold blue for a quiet room, warm amber when you want it soft, or the whole run of sixteen. Flash, fade and strobe come with them, so the moon lamp can hold one colour all evening or cycle on its own while you stop paying attention to it.

AUTO-OFF TIMER

It Turns Itself Off

Fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes, set on the remote, and then it goes out by itself. It is the setting most people leave it on, because a lamp that switches itself off is a lamp you never have to get back up for.

Charge it once. Then forget about it.

Frequently asked
questions.

The questions people actually ask before buying one.

The touch ring on the base cycles through seven colours — tap, next colour. The remote gives you all sixteen plus flash, fade and strobe, the brightness and the auto-off timer. The ring is the one you will use most; the remote is the one that has everything.

Six inches across, sitting on a round wooden base with two angled dowels holding it. That is about the size of a grapefruit — nightstand and windowsill scale rather than centrepiece scale.

More than nine hours in the default state, from a 500 mAh battery, charged over USB. Run it brighter and you will get less, which is true of every rechargeable lamp.

Only while it is charging. After that there is no cable, so you can put it somewhere there is no socket and move it whenever you like.

It switches the lamp off on its own after fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes. You set it on the remote — the touch ring does not do timers.

No, and it is not trying to be. It lights a nightstand and the wall behind it, and turned down it is a soft glow to sleep next to. Decorative lighting, not a reading lamp.

The moon lamp, its wooden base, a remote handset and an instruction sheet.
