Most of these things come in one size, and the size is always wrong for the shelf you had in mind. This moon lamp comes in three. Two of them — 4.7 and 4.8 inches — are near enough identical, so the real choice is between a moon that fits in the palm of your hand and a 7.1-inch one that takes over the end of a sideboard.

Pick the small one for a nightstand, where it sits behind a book and lights the wall. Pick the big one if you want the thing people notice when they walk in. Same printed lunar surface either way: shallow craters and grey maria with genuine depth to them, because the shell is 3D printed rather than painted, and the light breaks up across all of it instead of coming out flat.

The stand comes with the moon lamp, and it is worth a sentence. Two flat pale wooden slats crossed in an X, so the sphere sits in the V where they meet. It is plain and it holds the moon lamp at a slight tilt, which is the angle you want if it is going on a low shelf and you are looking down at it.

Colour is a setting, not a decision you make at checkout. Sixteen of them on the remote, from a cold blue through green to a warm amber, plus four modes — flash, fade, strobe and smooth. There is a touch control on the lamp itself that steps through seven of the sixteen, which is enough when the remote has gone missing and quietly annoying when you wanted one of the other nine.

It runs off a built-in battery and charges over USB, so once it is charged there is no cable going anywhere. The remote also holds an auto-off timer — fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes — which is the setting most people end up leaving it on, because a moon lamp that switches itself off at midnight is a moon lamp you never have to get up for.

Three sizes, and the stand is scaled to whichever you order. The two smaller ones are a tenth of an inch apart, so the real decision is small or large.

  • 4.7" – nightstand size; sits behind a book
  • 4.8" – the same thing, a hair larger
  • 7.1" – sideboard or wide-shelf size; the one people notice

Power: a built-in rechargeable battery, charged over USB. Control: a remote for sixteen colours, four modes, brightness and the timer, plus a touch control on the lamp for seven colours. Care: wipe the sphere and the wooden stand with a dry, soft cloth — the wood is untreated, so keep it away from water.

THREE SIZES

Three Sizes, One Shape

Two small ones a tenth of an inch apart and one at 7.1 inches that is genuinely a different object in a room. The stand scales with the sphere, so the proportions stay the same whichever you pick. Choose the size at the top of the page.

SIXTEEN COLOURS

Sixteen Colours, Four Modes

Cold blue for a quiet room, warm amber when you want it soft, or the whole run of sixteen if you are in that sort of mood. Four modes come with them — flash, fade, strobe and smooth — so the moon lamp can hold one colour all evening or drift between them on its own.

DIMMABLE

Turn It Down To A Glow

The brightness steps down as far as a faint glow and up until it is lighting the wall behind the nightstand. Low and warm is the setting it earns its place on: bright enough to find the door by, dim enough to leave on with your eyes shut.

AUTO-OFF TIMER

It Puts Itself Out

Set fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes on the remote and the lamp goes out on its own. The catch is that the timer lives on the remote and nowhere else, so it is worth keeping the handset in the drawer of whatever the lamp stands on.

Set the colour. Then set the timer.

Frequently asked
questions.

The questions people actually ask before buying one.

The 4.7 and 4.8-inch versions are within a tenth of an inch of each other, so think of those as one choice: a moon that sits comfortably on a nightstand or a desk. The 7.1-inch one is the one that changes a room, and it wants a sideboard, a wide shelf or a console rather than a crowded desk.

Yes. Two flat pale wooden slats crossed in an X, sized to the sphere you order. The moon sits in the V where the slats meet, tilted slightly back.

Sixteen colours and four modes — flash, fade, strobe and smooth — all live on the remote, along with the brightness and the timer. There is also a touch control on the lamp that cycles through seven of the sixteen, which covers you if the handset wanders off.

No. There is a rechargeable battery inside and it charges over USB, so once it is topped up you can move it to a shelf with no socket near it and there is no cable in the picture at all.

It switches the lamp off by itself after fifteen, thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes. You set it from the remote; the touch control on the lamp does not do timers.

Not really, and it is not meant to be. At full brightness it lights a nightstand and the wall behind it; turned down it is a soft glow you can sleep next to. It is decorative lighting.

It is 3D printed, so the craters have real depth rather than being a picture wrapped round a smooth ball. Run a thumb over it and you can feel the texture, and that unevenness is what makes the light break up the way it does.
